Grief has engulfed Skuumu near Gyaman-Nkwanta in the Amansie Central District following the tragic death of four suspected illegal miners after a galamsey pit collapsed on Wednesday afternoon.

The victims, believed to be young men searching for survival through illegal mining, were trapped underground when the pit suddenly caved in at about 4:00 pm.

Residents say the incident threw the entire community into panic, with cries for help filling the area moments after the collapse.

Reports indicate that the land belonged to Volta Resource, a mining company, which allegedly handed it over to illegal miners for mining activities, while Logist Group Company Limited had been assigned by government to reclaim the degraded land.

Rescue teams, security personnel, and residents worked for hours before an excavator was brought in to retrieve the bodies.

One of the deceased has been identified as Solomon Amadevor, while the identities of the other victims are yet to be officially released.

The tragic incident has once again raised concerns about the growing dangers of illegal mining and the risks many young people take in search of quick income through galamsey.
