A former Country Director of Amnesty International Ghana and a Human Rights activist Mr. Robert Amoafo has observed that the payment of the reparations through funds and support to mostly Africans and Caribbean countries from the West are all clear indications that our colonial masters feel some amount of regret during the slave trade era.
Speaking to OWIATV NEWS, Mr. Robert Amoafo said the colonial masters over the years have been very deliberate to repatriate some soft loans, grants and funds in the form of reparations to pay off some of the unfortunate actions taken during the transatlantic slave trade era where over 12 million people from the sub-region were taken into captivity.
The United Nations General Assembly has approved a landmark resolution, spearheaded by Ghana, that formally declares slavery and the transatlantic slave trade as one of the greatest injustices against humanity and calls for reparations. The resolution, which passed during a vote concluded on Wednesday, marks a diplomatic victory for Ghana and reflects growing global momentum toward addressing the historical atrocities of the slave trade and their enduring legacies.
The resolution passed with 123 member states voting in favour, 3 against, and 53 abstentions. The text of the resolution recognizes the transatlantic slave trade as a horrific tragedy that inflicted centuries of suffering, violence, and economic exploitation on millions of Africans and people of African descent.
But Mr. Robert Amoafo maintained that in as much as some of the reparations were paid in certain forms it was not backed by deliberate legislations to guide the payment process to the various victimized countries in the World.
He therefore indicated that the reparation though would demand some form of monetary compensations, it would not come as soon as expected in most cases some of these crusaders’ tenure of office, the President John Dramani Mahama deserves some commendations for championing the crusade in his second term of office.
