The campaign team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairman aspirant Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi has taken on presidential staffer Rosemond Obeng over remarks suggesting that individuals with active court cases should not be allowed to contest for party leadership positions.

Wontumi’s camp is also arguing that legal challenges do not automatically disqualify political figures from leading the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a statement issued by the Wontumi Campaign Communication Directorate on Saturday (16 May) the team described the reported comments as historically and politically flawed, saying many influential leaders across the world faced imprisonment, prosecution or legal battles before later assuming leadership roles.

The campaign criticised what it described as an attempt to judge political suitability solely on the basis of ongoing legal proceedings and maintained that leadership should ultimately be decided through democratic processes rather than public perception surrounding court cases.

The statement also cited former U.S. President Donald Trump and other political figures who faced legal or political challenges while remaining active in public life.

The campaign argued that legal proceedings should not be equated with guilt and insisted that political struggles and public scrutiny often formed part of leadership journeys.

“Trials do not destroy great leaders; they often prepare them for greater responsibilities,” the statement said
